Nolvadex® (tamoxifen citrate)
Tamoxifencitrate (Nolvadex) tablets USP, a nonsteroidal antiestrogen, are fororal administration.A synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen antagonist usedin the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Tamoxifen citratetablets are available as:10 mg Tablets. Each tablet contains 15.2 mg ofTamoxifen citrate which is equivalent to 10 mg of Tamoxifen.20 mgTablets. Each tablet contains 30.4 mg of Tamoxifen citrate which isequivalent to 20 mg of Tamoxifen.Each tablet contains the followinginactive ingredients: carboxymethylcellulose calcium, magnesiumstearate, mannitol and starch.Chemically, Tamoxifen is the trans-isomerof a triphenylethylene derivative.
Nolvadex, an anticancerdrug, is given to treat breast cancer. It also has proved effectivewhen cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Nolvadex is mosteffective in stopping the kind of breast cancer that thrives onestrogen.
Nolvadex is also prescribed to reduce the risk ofinvasive breast cancer following surgery and radiation therapy forductal carcinoma in situ. The drug can also be used to reduce the oddsof breast cancer in women at high risk of developing the disease. Itdoes not completely eliminate your chances, but in a five-year study ofover 1,500 high-risk women, it slashed the number of cases by 44percent.
Although Nolvadex reduces the risk of breast cancer, itincreases othe possibility of developing endometrial (uterine) cancer.Women taking Nolvadex should have routine gynecological examinationsand report any abnormal vaginal bleeding, changes in menstrual periods,change in vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain or pressure to the doctorimmediately. Even after Nolvadex therapy has stopped, any abnormalvaginal bleeding should be reported at once.
