Anavar for Women: Dosage, Cycle, Results and the Stop Rules

    Editorial

The One Compound Women Actually Run

Anavar for women is not a compromise choice. Oxandrolone is the anabolic steroid with the most clinical data in female patients — burn recovery, Turner syndrome, HIV wasting, older women in resistance-training trials — and the one with the lowest androgenic activity relative to its anabolic effect, which is why it became the default female compound in physique sport and stayed there. Women on Anavar are the largest group of female steroid users by a wide margin, and most of them run it alone at doses a tenth of what men use.

This guide is the practical companion to the Anavar side effects in women page, which covers what goes wrong. This one covers how it is run when it goes right: why women choose it, the 5 mg and 10 mg doses and the 20 mg mistake, a week-by-week cycle, the results women report, what it does to libido, mood and the menstrual cycle, use over 40, how it compares with Winstrol and Primobolan for women, and the stop rules that keep the changes reversible.

Anavar for women is 5–10 mg a day for six weeks, split morning and evening, with a hard stop at the first sign of voice change. That protocol produces 2–4 lb of lean tissue, visible hardness and a strength jump with a low virilization risk. 20 mg is where the risk stops being low.

Why Anavar Is the Female Compound

The reason is the ratio. Oxandrolone's anabolic-to-androgenic ratio is roughly 10:1 against testosterone's 1:1, so at doses that build tissue it delivers a fraction of the androgenic signal that drives virilization — voice deepening, clitoral enlargement, facial hair. It does not aromatise, so there is no estrogen conversion and no water retention. It is oral, which matters more for women than men because female protocols almost never involve injectables. And it has a track record: clinical trials have given oxandrolone to women at 5–20 mg for months, and the side-effect profile at the low end is documented rather than guessed.

Women and Anavar have a longer shared history than women and any other anabolic, and the reason shows in the comparison with the alternatives women are sometimes offered. Winstrol is more androgenic and virilizes at lower doses. Primobolan is mild but injectable and expensive. Testosterone in any form is off the table for physique purposes. Clenbuterol is not a steroid and does different things. Anavar for fat loss, hardness and strength without the androgenic cost is, for most women, the only compound in the category that fits — which is why the benefits of Anavar for women are discussed so much more than any alternative's.

Anavar Dosage for Women: 5, 10 and the 20 mg Mistake

Anavar dosage for women runs from 2.5 mg to 20 mg a day, and the whole risk-benefit calculation lives inside that range. At 5 mg — the starting dose for a first cycle — most women see improved training capacity, better pumps and a visible tightening by week three, with virilization reports close to zero. At 10 mg, the standard dose for a second or later cycle, results are noticeably stronger: 2–4 lb of lean tissue over six weeks, a 10–15% strength gain, and a hard, dry look. Virilization at 10 mg over six weeks is uncommon but not absent, and it is the dose at which a woman needs to actually watch for it. At 15–20 mg, results improve only marginally and the reports of voice change, clitoral sensitivity and hair growth rise steeply. The 20 mg dose exists in competitive circles, and the price for it is a permanent voice change often enough that most female coaches will not programme it.

Because oxandrolone's half-life is nine to ten hours, a 10 mg dose is split as 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg in the evening; 5 mg is taken once. Tablets at 10 mg are the format women use; 50 mg tablets cannot be divided accurately enough and belong in the male protocols the Anavar cycle guide covers.

Anavar Cycle for Women: Week by Week

The standard Anavar cycle for women is six weeks, and the cautious first cycle is four. Eight weeks is the ceiling, and few coaches programme it, because the results plateau around week six while the cumulative androgen exposure keeps rising.

The dose step from 5 mg to 10 mg at week three is where most women decide the rest of the cycle. If the first two weeks at 5 mg produced no side effects, 10 mg is reasonable; if there was any acne flare, oiliness or mood change, staying at 5 mg costs a little result and buys a lot of safety. Time off after the cycle is at least as long as the cycle itself — six weeks on, six to eight weeks off — and the Anavar results week by week timeline shows what each stage looks like in more detail.

"A man's strength lies in his ability to stay standing when it would be easier to fall." — Yujiro Hanma

For a woman on Anavar, standing means stopping at 10 mg when 15 mg is tempting, and stopping the cycle at the first sign rather than the third.

    Results Women Report

The results of Anavar for women are consistent across the community logs and the clinical trials, and they are more about composition than scale weight. Over a six-week cycle at 10 mg, most women report a lean gain of 2–4 lb, body fat down one to three points if diet supports it, strength up 10–15% on compound lifts, and a visibly harder, more defined look that appears around week three and peaks at week six. Muscle feels fuller without water, vascularity shows in the arms and shoulders, and recovery between sessions improves noticeably. The Anavar before and after guide shows the female version by dose.

Anavar for weight loss in women is a common search and a slightly wrong framing. Oxandrolone does not burn fat on its own; what it does is preserve and build lean tissue while a caloric deficit does the fat loss, so the scale often moves less than the mirror. Women expecting a weight-loss drug are disappointed; women expecting a recomposition tool are not.

Libido, Mood and the Menstrual Cycle

Anavar for women libido effects are real and usually the first thing a woman notices. Oxandrolone is an androgen, and even at 5–10 mg most women report a marked rise in libido and sexual sensitivity within the first two weeks — for many it is the most immediate effect of the compound. Mood typically improves too: better drive, more confidence in training, a general sense of well-being that tracks the androgen rise. The flip side appears after the cycle, when libido and mood can dip below baseline for a few weeks while natural hormones settle.

The menstrual cycle is more variable. Some women see no change at 5 mg; at 10 mg, irregular timing, lighter periods or a missed cycle are reported by a meaningful minority, and the cycle normally returns within four to eight weeks of stopping. A period that has not returned after eight weeks is a reason to see a physician rather than to wait longer. Clitoral sensitivity increases in most users and is not by itself a warning sign; clitoral enlargement is, and the difference is covered in the Anavar side effects in women guide.

    Anavar for Women Over 40

Anavar for women over 40 — and for menopausal women — has a better evidence base than any other use of the compound, because the clinical trials of oxandrolone in older adults were run on exactly this population. Trials in postmenopausal women and older adults combining oxandrolone with resistance training showed lean-mass and strength gains at 5–10 mg over twelve weeks, with bone density benefits and side effects limited to mild lipid changes and occasional liver enzyme elevations at those doses. Menopausal women often report that oxandrolone restores the training response and body composition that fell away with estrogen, and the libido effect is frequently cited as a benefit rather than a side effect.

The cautions are the same as for younger women, with two additions. Lipids matter more after 40: HDL falls 20–30% even at 10 mg, and a woman with cardiovascular risk factors should have a lipid panel before and after. And a physician's involvement is more realistic in this age group — oxandrolone is prescribed off-label to older women for exactly these purposes, and a clinician who will run the blood work is the better route than the underground one the Anavar for sale guide describes.

Anavar vs Winstrol vs Primobolan for Women

Three compounds come up in every female cycle discussion, and Anavar wins the comparison for most purposes.

    Female compounds compared

    Compound
    Female dose
    Virilization risk
    Trade-off

    Anavar (oxandrolone)

    5–10 mg oral

    Low

Mild liver and lipid effect; cost

    Winstrol (stanozolol)

    5 mg oral

    Moderate to high

    Joint dryness, more androgenic, cheaper

    Primobolan (methenolone)

    50–100 mg/wk injectable

    Low

    Injectable, expensive, slow

Winstrol produces a drier, more striated stage look and is chosen by some competitors for the final weeks of a prep, but it virilizes at lower thresholds and dries joints; the Anavar vs Winstrol comparison covers the female section in detail. Primobolan matches Anavar's low androgenic profile and is the compound experienced female competitors sometimes move to, but it is injectable, slow to act and expensive. For a first cycle and for most non-competitive use, oxandrolone is the only one of the three that most coaches recommend.

    The Stop Rules

Every reversible outcome for women on Anavar depends on stopping early enough, and the rules are simple. Stop immediately, not at the end of the week, at any change in voice — hoarseness, a lower pitch, a crack that was not there before — because voice change becomes permanent if use continues after it starts. Stop at clitoral enlargement as opposed to sensitivity. Stop at new facial or body hair growth. Reduce or stop at a severe acne flare or a period that disappears at 5 mg. Take blood work before the cycle and at week four — a liver panel and a lipid panel at minimum — and treat ALT or AST above twice baseline as a reason to reduce. The side effects page lists the full profile, and the Anavar PCT guide explains why women do not run SERM-based recovery after stopping.

    Frequently Asked Questions

At 5–10 mg it builds 2–4 lb of lean tissue over six weeks, raises strength 10–15%, hardens and defines muscle without water, and preserves muscle during a fat-loss diet. Libido and training drive rise within the first two weeks. It does not burn fat by itself; it makes a caloric deficit spare muscle instead of tissue.

5 mg a day for a first cycle, 10 mg for later cycles, split morning and evening because of the nine-to-ten-hour half-life. Results at 15–20 mg improve only marginally while virilization risk rises steeply, and 20 mg is where voice changes become common enough that most female coaches will not programme it.

Six weeks is the standard, four for a cautious first cycle, and eight is the ceiling few coaches use. Results plateau around week six while androgen exposure keeps accumulating. Time off should be at least as long as the cycle — six weeks on, six to eight off — to let the menstrual cycle and hormones normalise.

Yes, and usually within the first two weeks — it is often the first effect a woman notices, along with a rise in mood and training drive. The effect comes from oxandrolone's androgenic activity even at 5–10 mg. After the cycle, libido can dip below baseline for a few weeks while natural hormone levels settle, then returns.

No. Tamoxifen and clomiphene restart male testosterone production, which is not the axis affected in women; they would disrupt the menstrual cycle rather than restore it. A woman stops the tablets, takes at least as long off as she was on, and allows four to eight weeks for her cycle to normalise, with blood work if in doubt.

For a first cycle, yes — start at 5 mg. For a later cycle with no side effects at 5 mg, 10 mg is the standard Anavar dose for women and the one most results are reported at. It carries a low but real virilization risk, so voice change and clitoral enlargement are watched for, with an immediate stop if either appears.
