Anavar Prescription and Legality After the 2023 FDA Withdrawal

Anavar Prescription and Legality After the 2023 FDA Withdrawal

Anavar Prescription: Where the Law Stands in 2026

An Anavar prescription used to be a straightforward thing. Oxandrolone was approved by the FDA in 1964, sold as Anavar by Searle until 1989 and as Oxandrin by Bio-Technology General and then Savient from 1995, with generic 2.5 mg and 10 mg tablets alongside. That changed in two steps. On 28 June 2023 the FDA withdrew approval of Oxandrin and of every generic oxandrolone tablet, at the request of the holders, after telling them in December 2022 that it considered the potential problems with the drug "sufficiently serious that the drug should be removed from the market", citing the label's warnings on peliosis hepatis, liver cell tumours and blood-lipid changes, and a 1984 advisory committee finding of no evidence of efficacy. In September 2023, corrected in October 2026, the agency formally determined that Oxandrin was withdrawn from sale for reasons of safety or effectiveness.

The consequence is that there is no FDA-approved oxandrolone product in the United States, no generic can be approved by referencing one, and what remains is Schedule III law, the compounding grey area, and the foreign and underground markets. This page sets out each.

Key takeaway: oxandrolone is a Schedule III controlled substance; possession without a prescription is a federal offence. Since June 2023 no approved oxandrolone exists in the US, and the FDA's 2023 determination that it was withdrawn for safety-or-effectiveness reasons puts even compounded prescriptions on uncertain ground. Nothing sold online as "Anavar" without a prescription is legal to buy.

    What Anavar Was Prescribed For

The Oxandrin label listed three indications: weight gain after surgery, severe trauma or chronic infection, or in patients who fail to gain or maintain weight without a clear cause; offsetting the protein catabolism caused by long-term corticosteroids; and relief of bone pain accompanying osteoporosis. The dose was 2.5 to 20 mg a day in two to four divided doses, for two to four weeks, repeated intermittently as needed. In practice it was also used off-label, most establishedly in severe burn recovery, where it was studied for preserving lean mass, and in HIV-associated wasting, the indication behind the 262-man Grunfeld trial (JAIDS 2006). The clinical effect size is documented in Anavar benefits; the trials themselves ran at 20 mg, not the 40 to 50 mg of recreational use.

What the label never covered is the reason most people search for an Anavar prescription: cutting, physique, or "adding something to TRT". A physician could prescribe off-label while the drug was approved; with approval withdrawn, there is no approved product to prescribe.

    Is Anavar Legal?

Is Anavar legal: status by country

    Country
    Status
    Note

    United States

Schedule III controlled substance (Anabolic Steroids Control Act 1990)

Possession without a prescription is a federal offence; import is a customs offence; no approved product since June 2023

    Canada

Schedule IV (Controlled Drugs and Substances Act)

    Prescription-only; personal import illegal

    United Kingdom

    Class C

Legal to possess for personal use, illegal to supply or import by post; not a licensed medicine

    Australia

Schedule 4 prescription-only; anabolic steroids also under state criminal law

    Prescription required

Parts of Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia

Pharmacy sale with loose or no prescription

Legal there; bringing it into the US is not

The state searches, is Anavar legal in Texas, in California, in Florida, all have the same answer, because the federal schedule applies everywhere and no state has a looser rule. In tested sport it is prohibited outright and detectable in urine for weeks, as the half-life guide explains.

Can You Still Get an Anavar Prescription?

In theory, through compounding. A compounding pharmacy may prepare a drug from a bulk substance that is a component of an approved drug, that has a United States Pharmacopeia monograph, or that is on the FDA's bulk-substances list. Oxandrolone has a USP monograph, and compounded oxandrolone is what TRT and men's health clinics have dispensed since the brand disappeared, which is the route the TRT clinic guide describes. The FDA's determination that the drug was withdrawn for safety or effectiveness reasons is the step that precedes adding a substance to the list of drugs that may not be compounded at all, and until the agency acts on that, clinics are prescribing a drug the regulator has said should not be on the market. A patient considering it should ask the clinic directly how it reads that position.

What a prescription never did is unlock the recreational dose. Clinics that prescribe write 10 to 20 mg a day for defined courses with blood work; the 40 to 50 mg of cycle logs has no clinical rationale and no legitimate prescriber.

    What "Legal Anavar" Means Online

Three things trade on the name. Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals' "Anavar" is a dietary supplement that contains no oxandrolone and is legal because of that; the Hi Tech Anavar review explains what is in it. Foreign pharmaceutical generics from India, Turkey, Moldova or Thailand are legal where they are made and illegal to import. And underground tablets are illegal everywhere and unverified by default, which is why the test kit guide exists. None of the three is a prescription product, and no website that ships oxandrolone without one is operating legally in the United States, whatever its checkout page says. Anavar for sale covers each source and its risks.

    The Enforcement Reality

Federal prosecutions of individual buyers of personal quantities are rare; enforcement concentrates on manufacturers, importers and sellers. That is a description of practice, not of the law. Customs seizures of personal imports are common, a seizure letter is the usual outcome, and a prior seizure can matter later. The legal risk is the one most buyers focus on; the product and counterparty risks, covered in the for-sale guide, are the ones that more often cause harm.

Only with a valid prescription. Oxandrolone is a Schedule III controlled substance; possession without a prescription is a federal offence and importing it is a customs offence. Since June 2023 there is no FDA-approved oxandrolone product.

The former label covered weight gain after surgery, trauma or chronic infection, protein loss from long-term corticosteroids, and bone pain in osteoporosis, at 2.5 to 20 mg a day. Burn recovery and HIV wasting were the main off-label uses.

Approval of Oxandrin and all generics was withdrawn on 28 June 2023 at the holders' request after the FDA said the potential problems were serious enough to remove the drug, citing the liver and lipid warnings and a 1984 advisory committee finding of no evidence of efficacy. In September 2023 the FDA determined the withdrawal was for reasons of safety or effectiveness.

Only as a compounded product, which some TRT and men's health clinics dispense at 10 to 20 mg a day. The FDA's 2023 determination leaves that practice on uncertain ground, and a patient should ask the clinic how it addresses it.

Oxandrolone is Class C: legal to possess for personal use, illegal to supply, sell or import by post. It is not a licensed medicine in the UK.

Yes, because it is a supplement that contains no oxandrolone. It is legal for the same reason it is not Anavar.
