What is Anavar is the question every other page on this site assumes has been answered, so this is the page that answers it. Anavar is the original brand name for oxandrolone, a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone, developed by Searle in 1962 and approved by the FDA in 1964. Whatever else the answer to what is Anavar includes, it starts here: the Anavar steroid is an anabolic-androgenic steroid in the strict pharmacological sense: a synthetic derivative of a natural androgen that binds the androgen receptor and produces both anabolic (tissue-building) and androgenic (masculinising) effects. It is not a peptide, not a SARM and not a supplement, three things it is regularly confused with. What makes the Anavar steroid unusual within its class is how far the anabolic and androgenic effects have been separated. Testosterone scores 100 on both scales; oxandrolone scores 322 to 630 anabolic and 24 androgenic in the standard assays. Those figures overstate the real-world gap, nobody builds five times more muscle on it than on testosterone, but they correctly describe its character: a compound that builds with relatively little of the masculinising signal that other steroids carry.

Anavar (oxandrolone) works the way every anabolic steroid works, by binding androgen receptors in muscle and bone and switching on protein synthesis, nitrogen retention and, over weeks, the growth of contractile tissue, with three structural modifications that change how it behaves. The A-ring of the DHT molecule has an oxygen substituted for a carbon at position 2, which prevents the aromatase enzyme from converting it to estrogen: no estradiol, no water, no gynecomastia. The 17-alpha position carries a methyl group, which stops the liver from destroying it on first pass and lets it work as an oral, at the cost of the liver stress every 17-alpha-alkylated steroid shares. And because it is already a DHT derivative, it is not further converted to DHT by 5-alpha-reductase, which lowers some, not all, of the hair and prostate effects.

Two secondary actions matter in practice. Oxandrolone suppresses sex hormone-binding globulin by 40 to 60%, which frees more of whatever testosterone is present and is part of why it feels stronger on a testosterone base than its dose suggests. And it suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary axis like any exogenous androgen, so natural testosterone falls 30 to 50% by week four at recreational doses, the Anavar PCT guide covers the consequences. What is Anavar used for medically has a longer list than most people expect. The FDA label covers weight gain after surgery, chronic infection or severe trauma; offsetting protein catabolism from long-term corticosteroid use; and relief of bone pain in osteoporosis. Off-label and in clinical trials it has been used for HIV-associated wasting, alcoholic hepatitis, Turner syndrome growth support, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and, its most established modern use, severe burn recovery, where it became a standard of care for preserving lean mass and speeding wound healing. The clinical dose is 2.5 to 20 mg a day in divided doses, for courses of two to four weeks that may be repeated.

The search "what did the FDA replace Anavar with in the USA" has a short answer: nothing. Searle discontinued the original Anavar brand in 1989 amid the wider backlash against anabolic steroids that produced the 1990 Anabolic Steroids Control Act. Bio-Technology General relaunched oxandrolone as Oxandrin in 1995, primarily for HIV wasting, and Savient sold it until the manufacturer withdrew it from the market in the early 2020s for commercial reasons. In 2023 the FDA published a determination that Oxandrin was not withdrawn for safety or effectiveness reasons, a routine regulatory notice that allows generic applications to remain valid, and the source of the search.

The practical consequence is that no branded oxandrolone is marketed in the United States and the generic tablets that existed have been discontinued too. Legal oxandrolone in the US now means a compounding pharmacy on a physician's prescription. For most people asking what is Anavar, the real question is what it does in a bodybuilding context, and that is where most of the search volume comes from. At 40 to 50 mg a day for six weeks, men report 4 to 6 lb of lean tissue with no water, a 10 to 15% strength increase, and a visibly harder, drier, more vascular physique from week three, the recomposition result that made it the standard cutting oral. Women at 5 to 10 mg report 2 to 4 lb, a similar strength gain and the same hardening effect with a low virilization risk. Is Anavar safe is therefore a question with a relative answer: it is the lowest-risk oral steroid in common use, and it is not risk-free. Is Anavar legal depends on the country and on whether there is a prescription. Part of what is Anavar, for anyone who has only seen it online, is what the tablets look like. Pharmaceutical oxandrolone was made as 2.5 mg and 10 mg tablets, small, white, round or oval, scored, in blister packs or pharmacy bottles. Compounded oxandrolone from US pharmacies is usually a plain white capsule or tablet in a labelled amber bottle at 10 mg. What does Anavar look like on the underground market is far more varied: 10 mg and 50 mg tablets in white, yellow, orange, blue or pink, round or hexagonal, stamped with a lab logo or nothing at all, and liquid oxandrolone in dropper bottles at 20 to 50 mg per millilitre.
